All music is based on scales! Your final composition, a single line melody in binary form, must be based on one of 4 scales: major, natural minor, melodic minor, or harmonic minor. It is important to know what notes are available for your use in your melody. You need to know how to associate the key signature with the notes written in your melody. You have the choice in how you approach the melody - either choose a key and write the melody based on those notes, OR write a melody and figure out what key it is in.
